For the non-hams
Amateur radio is a licensed hobby where people build and operate their own communication systems: voice, data, and everything in between, no carrier or account required. It is the original decentralized network, and it still works when nothing else does.
My corner of it leans toward the networked modes. AllStarLink connects radio nodes over the internet, which means my node is both a radio and a Linux service. That overlap is where most of my projects come from.
The node
I run an AllStarLink node, and because it is also a computer, it has grown a REST API, an MCP server for AI agents, and a browser control panel. The full story is in the AllStar node toolchain write-up.
